Purpose of the National Psychology Exam (NPE):
While the field of Psychology is extremely broad, the most important thing to know about the NPE is that the exam questions are derived only from the exam curriculum, and so candidates are required to be familiar with the exam curriculum, which is published on the Board’s website.
The NPE is just one tool that the Board uses to assess the minimum required level of applied professional knowledge of psychology, and it is broken down into the following four domains:
– Domain 1: Ethics (including applied ethical and professional reasoning)
– Domain 2: Assessment (including methods and approaches)
– Domain 3: Intervention (including intervention selection and implementation), and
– Domain 4: Communication (including communication and reporting skills).
Our self-paced online course covers each of these Domains individually to support your own study preparation journey.

The National Psychology Exam (NPE) Exam Curriculum explains the exam and required knowledge content.
Candidates are required to be familiar with the exam curriculum, which is published on the Board’s website. It is important to know that the exam questions are derived only from the exam curriculum. Therefore, we have developed our self-paced online course in line with the exam curriculum and the recommended reading list.
The NPE is designed to assess the core competencies for general registration as a psychologist in Australia.
It asseses the application of knowledge to psychological practice and is based on case studies and professional issues likely to be faced by psychologists working with the public across a broad range of scenarios.
The NPE assesses eight core competencies through four exam curriculum domains:
- ethics (including applied ethical and professional reasoning)
- assessment (including methods and approaches)
- intervention (including intervention selection and implementation), and
- communication (including communication and reporting skills).
